Images look fantastic, text is clean, and there wasn’t any noticeable unevenness in the backlighting. The MacBook Pro has always had great-looking displays, and the 16-inch version doesn’t disappoint. The 16-inch MacBook Pro allows users to adjust the refresh rate of the built-in display. The keyboard is the most vital of input devices, so how could these changes not be carefully considered in the first place? Apple has been making metal Mac laptops for over 18 years maybe this was a case of taking the keyboard for granted. And the decisions about the Escape and arrow keys were seemingly made without studying the user base. The butterfly keyboard was introduced because the company became obsessed with making its laptops thinner and thinner, but it got to a point where usability was sacrificed to achieve those goals. These are welcome changes and bring back a good amount of intuitiveness.Īll that being said about the keyboard-they’re all changes for the better-I can’t help but think about the absurdity of it all. The arrow keys on the lower right of the keyboard have reverted back to the inverted-T layout, with the right and left arrow keys now half-height buttons. The Touch ID button, on the opposite side of the Touch Bar, is also its own button. Except this time, Apple changed it so that the Escape key is no longer integrated in the Touch Bar and is its own button. The Touch Bar is still a part of the MacBook Pro, whether you want it to be or not.

I want to avoid a reinstall if at all possible.Īny ideas on how to resolve this are much appreciated. The full-sized right and left arrow keys are gone. I remember Windows updated itself before this started happening, so I guess this is the most likely cause.

I suspect some update issue or weird power-management effects, but can't pinpoint it. The laptop is plugged in, Windows Game Mode is on, and Power Mode is set to "best performance". In the Task Manager I can see that the "Anti-Malware Service" is still running - strangely - but it does not seem to consume any resources, so it seems inactive.

I disabled Windows Defender both in the settings and permanently per registry key. There are no concurrent applications running. It does not appear to be a loading issue either - I can stay where I am (in the game world) and it still happens. I used MSI Afterburner to configure a custom fan curve to put the fan at 100% when the system hits 50° C / 122° F, just to make double sure to optimize thermals. I cannot see a single indicator of anything unusual or changing - be it thermals, utilization, or voltage - other than FPS dropping hard and then back up. GPU utilization is at 100% throughout, and CPU utilization at about 10-20% throughout. Curiously, they start out at about 72° C / 165° F right after the game launches, then gradually sink to about 60° / 140° F during play.

But I installed MSI afterburner and thermals are OK at about 60° C / 140° F. Then it goes back up and repeats the cycle, almost regularly.ĭoom Eternal is no different, frequently dropping to about 6 fps and back up. Now, in Far Cry New Dawn it is pegged at about half the performance at 16 fps, and about every 15 seconds, it drops down to 3 fps and stays there for about 20 seconds. When I tuned back in, the FPS drops kicked in. Being busy, I stopped booting into Windows for several months.

The games are installed on an external Seagate 1TB OneTouch SSD, USB 3.0, 400 MB/S, due to space constraints. Intel Core i7-8850H, 6-core, 2.6-4.3 GHz, 16 GB RAM, AMD Radeon Pro Vega 20, 512 GB NVME SSD. Since about two months, I am experiencing regular, hard FPS drops with my late-2018 Macbook Pro while gaming.
